On September 25, 2009, WorldStrides hosted 20 educators from the Long Beach area aboard The Queen Mary for our LeadershipQuest. The event began Saturday afternoon when David Leneker, Vice President of WorldStrides, and Amy Westby, WorldStrides' Director of Education, discussed with our guests the extraordinary educational travel opportunities available when traveling with WorldStrides. A representative from the Newseum's Education Department then led the educators in an interactive current events trivia game. Teachers were also treated to a behind the scenes tour of The Queen Mary, and a scavenger hunt with clues given during their private tour.
When guests returned to the historic Verandah Grill room, they were welcomed with appetizers and drinks, followed by a delicious dinner. Dinner ended with keynote speaker, Maria Reyes, who awed the teachers with her real life story. As one of the original Freedom Writers from Erin Gruwell's famous class, Maria spoke about how her teacher helped transformed her life of gang violence and rebellion by opening her to a world of books and traveling outside of the classroom. The event concluded with a prize drawing for the teachers and photo opportunities with Maria.
